I have been messing around with the guitar lately and I am really enjoying that a fair amount. I am trying realy hard to leard the theory behind it as well as some songs and whatnot, so I can make my own stuff up from time to time and I think just like in poker, any time you learn the theory behind something, you tend to understand it and enjoy it that much more.
I learned some basic blues progressions, which is always nice to play and have some fun with the couple of progressions I know. I also need to work on knowing all the pentatonic scales, because they are so useful. Using the minor versions of these scales seems to be the stem of the bulk of blues solos.
For rock, I know some very basic chord progressions, such as the I-IV-V-I most standard progression and have been learning other variations of progressions and why they sound appropriate and why they work. I started to mess around with the various things in my head and on my guitar and found one I like a lot: Em-D-G-A. I am not sure why this works though, I need to learn the theory behind it. I initially thought it was in the key of G, but the A doesn't really fit with that key. Am would be a much more apprpriate chord than A for something in the key of G. Of course, if it isn't in G, then A might be appropriate after all! lol I don't know, I have much to learn and it sure is fun to do it!
